The Birth of My Dream Business

I wanted to write a little bit about how FLAVIA SOAPS & MORE started, over the years I have had the pleasure to meet so many new people, some of you know and are familiar with the beginning of my business, some of you don’t know, so I wanted to write a little background on how and why I started my Business in 2001.

Having my daughter changed my world in ways I never anticipated. Before she came into my life, I was climbing the corporate ladder, working long hours, and envisioning a future that seemed set in stone. But everything shifted when I held her in my arms for the first time. The idea of putting her in daycare while I spent my days at a desk filled me with guilt and dread. It wasn’t just the emotional toll—it was also the staggering cost of childcare. I realized that I had to make a choice: continue in a career that left me unfulfilled and away from my daughter, or take a leap of faith into the unknown.

After weeks of soul-searching and countless conversations with my husband, an idea began to take shape. I would create a store—a space that embodied everything I loved and dreamed about. Natural self-care products had always been a passion of mine, and I had a deep appreciation for the charm of vintage shabby chic furniture and cozy, elegant decor. What if I could bring all of that together in one place? A store where every sense would be delighted, where customers could smell the fresh candles and potions I created, touch the soft, cozy pillows designed with toile fabrics, and admire the glow of matching lampshades atop vintage glass lamps and crystal chandeliers.

The vision was clear: I wanted to create a sanctuary—a place where people would walk in and never want to leave. I dreamed of a store that felt like stepping into a cozy, sophisticated home filled with treasures that sparked joy.

Building the Dream

It wasn’t easy. My husband became my biggest supporter and partner in this endeavor. During the week, he worked his 9-to-5 job, but every evening, he would head into our garage to paint and age the vintage provincial furniture we found together at estate sales. On weekends, we scoured estate sales and flea markets, hunting for pieces that would bring my vision to life. Each item we selected—from ornate dressers to delicate chandeliers—was chosen with care, ensuring it fit the cohesive, inviting look I was creating.

While he painted furniture, I poured my heart into making candles and soaps. Late nights became the norm as I perfected my recipes and designs. The house often smelled like lavender, vanilla, and honey, a blend of scents that would soon welcome customers to my store. Together, we worked tirelessly, driven by a shared belief in the dream we were building.

Creating a Haven for Customers

When the doors of FLAVIA SOAPS & MORE finally opened, it was everything I had envisioned. Customers would step inside and immediately be greeted by the warm glow of candles and the comforting aroma of natural scents. They could run their fingers over the textured fabrics of pillows and admire the beauty of vintage furniture lovingly restored by my husband. Every detail, from the crystal chandeliers casting soft light to the custom lampshades and artful displays, was designed to create an atmosphere of comfort and inspiration.

People didn’t just shop—they lingered. They told me how much they loved the feeling of being in the store, how it transported them to a place of calm and beauty. Hearing those words made every late night, every sacrifice, worthwhile. It was proof that my vision had come to life.

Balancing Business and Family

Here she is! My Flavia

The best part of this journey was finding a way to balance my work with being a mother. My daughter was with me every step of the way, whether it was accompanying us to estate sales or playing quietly while I worked in the store. I crafted my schedule around her needs, and while it wasn’t always easy, it was deeply fulfilling.

She also became my little helper and constant observer. Every night, as I sewed pillows for the store, she would sit by my side, watching intently.

Looking back, leaving corporate America felt like a huge risk, but it was the right decision. My background in art had always called me toward something creative and meaningful, and this business allowed me to embrace that side of myself fully. The steady paycheck I gave up was replaced with something far more valuable: the freedom to create, to follow my passions, and to build a life centered on my family.

A Journey Worth Taking

Starting this business wasn’t just about creating a livelihood—it was about following a dream and building a life that aligned with my values. It taught me the power of perseverance, the importance of passion, and the joy of creating something beautiful from scratch. My husband’s unwavering support and our shared determination turned a dream into reality, and for that, I am endlessly grateful.

The journey has been challenging, but every step has been worth it. My business is more than just a store; it’s a reflection of my heart and a testament to the possibilities that arise when you follow your dreams. And the best part? I’ve been able to do it all while keeping my family close, which has been the greatest reward of all. If you would like to see all the beautiful things we now have on our website please click HERE
